Bengaluru has taken a significant step toward cleaner streets with the launch of a dedicated helpline under the Swachha Bengaluru initiative. The service, introduced by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, is aimed at addressing garbage accumulation across the city with a promise of resolution within one week.

The helpline enables citizens to submit photographs and exact locations of garbage dumps for swift clearance. Citizens can report garbage dumps with photos and locations for quick removal via WhatsApp number at 9448197197 .

This move is expected to enhance civic engagement and streamline waste management, especially in areas plagued by irregular garbage collection.

The initiative aligns with recent administrative shifts by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which implemented user charges for waste collection beginning April 1, 2025. Under the new policy, commercial entities are now required to pay ₹12 per kilogram of waste. Additionally, the BBMP has announced an annual escalation of 5% in these charges, signaling a push toward sustainable waste disposal practices.

In tandem with the helpline, funds have also been allocated to local MLAs to tackle related urban issues, including pothole repairs. The government’s multipronged strategy underscores a broader commitment to improving Bengaluru’s infrastructure and cleanliness standards.

This initiative is part of a wider effort to foster accountability, improve public services, and ensure that Bengaluru's rapid urbanization does not compromise its livability. With clear timelines for action and citizen participation, the Swachha Bengaluru helpline sets a precedent for responsive urban governance.
