Dr. Nagalakshmi Chowdhary, president of the Karnataka State Women’s Commission, has expressed concerns over the absence of a Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) committee in the state despite her repeated recommendations. Addressing the media, she emphasized the urgency of implementing measures to ensure women’s safety and proposed the establishment of a committee similar to Kerala’s Hema Committee.

Dr. Chowdhary revealed that several actresses have filed complaints alleging sexual misconduct, underscoring the necessity of robust mechanisms to address such issues. She reiterated that forming a POSH committee is a Supreme Court mandate, not a personal preference, and stressed that non-compliance could lead to severe consequences, including the cancellation of registrations for organizations found in deliberate violation.
She noted that while the state government has been urged multiple times to act, no tangible progress has been made. “Women’s safety is paramount, and it is our bounden duty to ensure this,” she stated. The Women’s Commission, she said, is determined to see such essential structures implemented without further delay.
Dr. Chowdhary also disclosed that the industry chamber had requested more time to set up the POSH committee, which she found concerning given its legal necessity. She urged swift action to avoid lapses in ensuring workplace safety for women across the state.
