When one thinks of Mysore Dasara, two iconic images come to mind—the 750 kg gold-plated ambari and the majestic Mysuru Dasara elephants that carry it. These gentle giants are not just an integral part of the festival; they are symbols of Mysore's rich heritage. Since 1932, these elephants have proudly paraded through the royal streets, carrying the golden ambari on Vijayadashami, and winning hearts with their grandeur and grace.

Here’s a look at some of the most renowned elephants of the Mysore Dasara Jumbo Savari:

1. Jayamarthanda

Jayamarthanda holds the distinction of being the first elephant to carry the golden ambari. Captured near Bettadapura in Periyapatna, this beloved elephant carried the ambari for 45 years. His legacy is so significant that Krishnadevaraya Wodeyar named a palace gate after him, commemorating his role in Mysore's royal history. Weighing a colossal 6,400 kg, Jayamarthanda's presence marked the beginning of a proud tradition.
