Private transport unions give February 23 deadline, demand Supreme Court appeal against High Court order allowing bike taxis in Karnataka
The Karnataka government has landed in a fresh transport policy crisis after the High Court directed it to permit bike taxi operations in the state. The order has triggered strong resistance from private transport unions, who have warned of a statewide shutdown if the government does not challenge the ruling in the Supreme Court.
Soon after the High Court’s direction, associations representing auto-rickshaw drivers, cab operators, and private bus owners came together to oppose the move. They have made it clear that bike taxis should not be allowed under any circumstances, arguing that it will severely affect their livelihoods and create regulatory imbalance in the transport sector.

Private transport unions have now issued a clear deadline to the government. They have demanded that the state file an appeal before the Supreme Court by February 23, explaining why bike taxi services should not be permitted. According to the unions, the government must place the problems caused by bike taxis before the apex court and seek a stay on the High Court order.
The unions have warned that failure to file an appeal will lead to a complete shutdown of auto-rickshaws, cabs, and private buses across Karnataka after February 23. This threat has significantly increased pressure on the government, which is already grappling with conflicting demands.
Adding to the tension, a photograph of representatives from a bike taxi association meeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has gone viral. Reports suggest that Rahul Gandhi has advised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to allow bike taxi services in the state. Though there is no official confirmation, the development has further angered private transport operators.
