Darshan and associates face renewed legal tensions as court adjourns Renukaswamy case hearing to September 9

Legal tensions have resurfaced for Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and 16 others accused in the high-profile Renukaswamy case, as the 64th Sessions Court on Monday adjourned proceedings to September 9.

The hearing, presided over by Judge I.P. Naik, was expected to address “charge framing” — a process in which the court determines the specific legal provisions under which the accused will be tried in Darshan case. All 17 accused, including actress Pavitra Gowda, were present, marking a contrast to the previous hearing when some failed to appear.

The adjournment prolongs uncertainty for the accused, who are simultaneously awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court on their bail appeal. During earlier arguments, the apex court had questioned the timeline of the trial, prompting government lawyers to commit to completing proceedings within six months. This raised expectations that the trial date might be set during Monday’s hearing, but no such decision was reached.

The Renukaswamy case has drawn intense media and public attention due to the involvement of prominent film industry figures. While the Sessions Court deliberates on framing charges, the Supreme Court’s pending bail verdict adds another layer of anxiety for the accused.

With both the trial commencement and bail decision hanging in the balance, September 9 now becomes the next critical date for the defence and prosecution alike.
