The Karnataka government has suspended senior IPS officer Ramachandra Rao following the circulation of alleged obscene videos, amid opposition pressure and the upcoming joint legislature session.

Bengaluru witnessed a major administrative development on Monday as the Karnataka government suspended Director General of Police (DGP) Ramachandra Rao in connection with an obscene video controversy that has triggered political and public outrage.

Ramachandra Rao, a 1993-batch senior IPS officer, was serving as the DGP of the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE). The suspension order was issued soon after multiple alleged obscene videos linked to him went viral on social media platforms. The videos reportedly date back to his tenure as Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Belagavi and allegedly show him in compromising situations with several women inside an office premises.

Taking note of the seriousness of the allegations and the potential damage to the image of the police department, the state government acted swiftly after the videos gained wide circulation. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had earlier stated that strict disciplinary action would be initiated against the officer once the matter came to light. Following this assurance, the government formally placed Ramachandra Rao under suspension.

However, the timing of the action has raised several questions. There is growing criticism that the government delayed its response despite the gravity of the allegations. Political circles suggest that the suspension was expedited to avoid embarrassment during the upcoming special joint legislature session scheduled for January 24.

Sources indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was preparing to aggressively raise the issue during the session, turning it into a major weapon against the ruling government. To prevent the matter from becoming a talking point for the opposition and to limit further political fallout, the government is believed to have moved ahead with the suspension.
