Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India to build its first dedicated electric two-wheeler plant in India, as Karnataka eyes more Japanese investments in advanced industries.
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Limited (HMSI), the Indian arm of Japanese auto giant Honda, is set to establish a new electric two-wheeler manufacturing facility in Karnataka. The upcoming unit, to be located next to Honda’s existing Narasapura plant in Kolar district, will see an investment of ₹600 crore.

The decision was announced during a meeting between Honda’s global executives and Karnataka’s Industries Minister M. B. Patil, who is currently leading a business delegation to Japan. The Narasapura facility will become Honda’s first dedicated production hub for electric two-wheelers in India, targeting both domestic buyers and export markets.

At present, the Narasapura unit manufactures 2.4 million two-wheelers annually. Honda also produces two EV models in India — the Activa e, which comes with a swappable battery system, and the QC1, offering a range of about 80 km per charge. Both models are already assembled at Narasapura, and the new expansion is expected to further boost Honda’s electric mobility presence in the country’s rapidly growing EV sector.

Apart from Honda, the Karnataka delegation held discussions with other leading Japanese firms such as Mitsubishi Electric, Yokogawa Electric, Tokyo Electron, and Restar Holdings. Talks centered around semiconductors, electronics manufacturing services (EMS), and opportunities to strengthen Karnataka’s role as a global innovation hub. Companies including Yokogawa and Restar expressed interest in expanding operations, with Restar moving towards a joint venture to establish distribution activities in India.
Minister Patil assured potential investors of Karnataka’s full support, pointing to the state’s strong semiconductor ecosystem, highly skilled talent pool, and industry-friendly policies. He emphasized that Karnataka continues to lead the nation in advanced manufacturing, electronics, and mobility solutions.
