With Ganesh Chaturthi around the corner, Bengaluru’s streets are already decked with colorful Vinayaka idols and festive decorations. While the city celebrates with zeal, the joy has turned sour for many who plan to travel to their hometowns for the festival.

A steep surge in private bus fares has left passengers fuming. Many Bengalureans head to their native places during Gowri Ganesha festival celebrations, but bus operators have hiked fares by up to three times, particularly on August 26, the day of the Ganesh Chaturthi.

Commuters allege that private bus owners are exploiting the festive rush, charging exorbitant amounts that go far beyond regular fares. Routes to districts such as Madikeri, Udupi, Dharwad, Belagavi, and Davangere are among the worst hit.

Regular ticket prices ranging between ₹500 and ₹1,200 have now skyrocketed to as much as ₹5,000 on certain routes. Passengers say the festive journey back home has become a financial burden, with no intervention to curb the exploitative hikes.

The sudden fare increase has angered many middle-class travelers who argue that festivals should be a time of togetherness, not an opportunity for profiteering. With no signs of relief, many are left with little choice but to pay heavily to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with their families.
