Karnataka gets 400 additional MBBS seats, boosting opportunities for medical aspirants

NMC approves 50 extra MBBS seats each in eight government medical colleges across Karnataka, taking the state’s total tally to 9,663 seats this year.

In a welcome relief for medical aspirants, Karnataka has secured 400 additional MBBS seats this year. The National Medical Commission (NMC) approved the expansion after the state government’s request, which will now benefit students in the second round of seat allotment.

A total of eight government medical colleges have been granted 50 additional seats each, including Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences (Ballari), Chikkaballapur Institute of Medical Sciences, Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (Kalaburagi), Belagavi, Hassan, Mysuru, Raichur, and Atal Bihari Vajapayee Medical College and Research Centre (Bengaluru). With this, Karnataka’s total MBBS seat count has crossed 9,663, up from 9,263.

Initially, the state had requested seat enhancement in 15 government colleges, but the NMC rejected several proposals citing infrastructural shortcomings. Requests from Bidar, Chamarajanagar, Gadag, Karwar, Koppal, Mandya, and Shivamogga institutes were turned down. For Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences and Atal Bihari Vajapayee Medical College, only 50 seats were approved against the 100 sought.

Alongside this, the NMC also cleared 50 additional seats at JGMMMC Hubli (a deemed-to-be university).

The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) clarified that these seats will not be open for fresh option entry. Instead, they will be allotted to candidates who had already secured seats in round 1 under Choice 2 and Choice 3 categories. “The system will re-run with the new seats added, which may change provisional results,” said KEA Executive Director Prasanna H.

With the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) set to conclude its round 2 allotments by September 12, KEA officials confirmed that final results could shift significantly due to the newly added seats.

The approval comes as a big win for Karnataka’s medical education sector, opening new doors for hundreds of aspiring doctors this academic year.
