Karnataka plans India’s first EV city near Bengaluru, spanning 80 acres with R&D, testing, and certification hubs to cement Bengaluru as EV capital

Karnataka is preparing for a major leap in electric mobility with plans to establish a dedicated Electric Vehicle (EV) city near Bengaluru. Nearly 80 acres have been identified to build a comprehensive ecosystem for testing, validation, research, and development, reinforcing the state’s leadership in India’s fast-growing EV sector.

Location and Scope

Land parcels within a 100-kilometre radius of Bengaluru are under consideration, with Tumakuru, Ramanagara, and Chikkaballapur emerging as key contenders. Peripheral sites are preferred due to space constraints in the city, making them ideal for large-scale facilities such as testing tracks, laboratories, and manufacturing hubs.

Industry-Government Collaboration

The initiative is being shaped through consultations between major EV players and the state’s IT-BT department. An industry consortium will submit recommendations to ensure the EV city supports every stage of the vehicle lifecycle—from design and testing to certification and production.

Supporting Start-ups and Giants

The EV city is envisioned as a plug-and-play environment catering to companies of all sizes. Start-ups will gain basic infrastructure, mid-sized firms will benefit from research support, and large manufacturers will have advanced R&D facilities—all within one integrated campus.
