Karnataka makes display of Child Helpline Number 1098 mandatory in institutions

The Karnataka government has directed all government offices, semi-government bodies, educational institutions, and service establishments across the state to prominently display the child helpline number 1098. The order, issued by the Chief Secretary, aims to ensure that children in distress can easily access timely assistance.

The initiative is being implemented under the Mission Vatsalya scheme, which focuses on child welfare, protection, and rehabilitation. Authorities emphasized that the helpline has become a crucial channel for reporting emergencies involving children, enabling interventions against issues such as underage marriages, child labor, neglect, and exploitation.

No room for delay in implementation

While certain departments had already complied with earlier instructions, others delayed citing confusion. The latest directive removes any scope for ambiguity by mandating permanent display boards in all institutions, leaving no room for delay in implementation.

The significance of the helpline was recently demonstrated in Vijayanagar district. In August, a teenager from Hagaribommanahalli taluk contacted 1098 to prevent her forced marriage. The intervention by officials ensured the marriage was stopped and arrangements were made for her to pursue higher studies, highlighting the life-changing role of the service.

Officials believe mandatory visibility of the helpline will enhance awareness and strengthen child protection mechanisms across Karnataka. The government hopes this step will encourage more children to seek help when needed, ultimately improving response times and safeguarding vulnerable minors from exploitation and harm.
