Deputy Lokayukta raises alarm over widespread corruption across Karnataka’s government departments, placing the state among the five most corrupt in India.
Karnataka continues to face a serious corruption crisis, with Deputy Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa stating that the state currently records 63% corruption, placing it among the top five most corrupt states in India. He explained that this estimate is based on cases and patterns directly observed after taking charge as Deputy Lokayukta.
His remarks were made during a book release event at the Bengaluru High Court Advocates’ Hall, where he highlighted the alarming extent of malpractice across multiple government departments. According to him, corruption is “overflowing” in almost every sector of administration, including hospitals, schools and hostels.

Justice Veerappa compared Karnataka’s situation with neighbouring Kerala, where corruption is reportedly around 10%, indicating a stark difference in governance practices between the two southern states.
He recalled that during the previous BJP government, a national periodical had ranked Karnataka as the No. 1 most corrupt state in the country, a report that had sparked widespread debate at the time. The current figures, he noted, show that the issue has remained severe despite changes in governance.

Warning of grave consequences, he stated that if corruption is not controlled immediately, the state may face serious risks in the future. He stressed that eliminating corruption is not just the responsibility of one institution but a collective social duty.
Justice Veerappa shared that during his visits to various government-run facilities, he consistently encouraged staff members to take an oath to fight corruption and work with integrity. He urged the legal community to participate actively in this mission to help improve society and restore public trust in institutions.
