Karnataka suspended 5,947 licences in 2025, with 4,735 for drunk driving. Bengaluru led with 4,479 cases; 1,512 violations still await action
The Karnataka Transport Department has reported the suspension of 5,947 driving licences (DLs) across the state between April and November 2025, with Bengaluru Urban Division accounting for the highest number at 4,479 cases. The crackdown reflects intensified enforcement against traffic violations, particularly during festive periods such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
Major Violations
The majority of suspensions, 4,735 cases, were linked to drinking and driving. Authorities have adopted a strict stance, enforcing immediate suspension of licences even for first-time offenders. Officials emphasized that such measures are necessary to safeguard pedestrians and other road users from reckless motorists.
Pending Cases
In addition to the suspensions already carried out, 1,512 cases involving rash driving, negligent riding, and other traffic violations remain pending with regional transport offices (RTOs). These cases are under review, and officials expect the overall number of suspensions to rise further as investigations conclude.
Enforcement Process
Reports of violations are first compiled by the traffic department and then forwarded to the respective RTOs. Based on these reports, licences are suspended for periods ranging from three to six months. In certain cases, hearings are conducted, allowing motorists to present their responses before final action is taken.
Intensified Checks
The Bengaluru Traffic Police have strengthened monitoring across the city, deploying personnel at 53 traffic stations with special focus on weekends and high-risk areas. The initiative underscores the city’s zero-tolerance approach to drinking and driving, ensuring that offenders are swiftly referred to the transport department for disciplinary action.

Policy Update on Emission Tests
Alongside the licence suspension drive, the Transport Department announced a change in emission testing rules for new vehicles. Effective December 31, 2025, the validity of emission certificates for newly registered vehicles has been extended to one year, compared to the earlier five-month period. After the first year, vehicles must undergo emission tests at regular intervals to comply with pollution control norms.
Snapshot of Action
• Total licences suspended (Apr–Nov 2025): 5,947
• Suspensions for drinking and driving: 4,735
• Cases pending with RTOs: 1,512
The measures highlight Karnataka’s push for safer roads and stricter compliance with traffic and environmental regulations.
