A swift intervention by a software engineer living in the United States helped foil a theft attempt at her family home in Mudhol, Bagalkot district. Using CCTV footage streamed to her mobile phone, she alerted her father in time, forcing the intruders to flee.
The incident occurred late at night in Siddarameshwara Nagar. The house belongs to Hanumantha Gowda Sankappa, who had installed CCTV cameras for security. His daughter Shruti, a tech professional based in America, had connected the system to her mobile through a SIM card for remote monitoring.

While checking the live feed, Shruti noticed unidentified men entering the compound. Acting immediately, she called her father and urged him to stay alert. As soon as Hanumantha Gowda opened the door, the intruders panicked and escaped. The attempted robbery was recorded on camera, providing crucial evidence for police.

Police sources said Mudhol town has recently witnessed several thefts, including a case at the residence of Ashok Karihonna, where 11 grams of gold and ₹40,000 in cash were stolen. Investigators suspect a gang active across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, popularly known as the “Chaddi gang,” which was earlier linked to thefts in Hyderabad.
Authorities are examining the CCTV footage from the Sankappa residence to identify the culprits. Meanwhile, residents have praised Shruti’s quick thinking and the role of technology in safeguarding homes from growing criminal threats.
