The Karnataka government has decided to set up a State Water Commission comprising 15 experts to manage water resources, resolve inter-state disputes, and promote modern irrigation methods.

In a major policy move, the Karnataka government has decided to establish a State Water Commission modeled after the Central Water Commission. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that the panel will comprise 15 experts, including scientists and specialists in water management, agriculture, and environmental studies.

The new commission will play a crucial role in addressing inter-state river water disputes, managing the state’s water resources, and formulating modern and sustainable irrigation practices. It aims to create a comprehensive framework for water governance that aligns with scientific and technological advancements.

According to DK Shivakumar, the commission’s responsibilities will include:

•    Studying future water demand and availability across domestic, agricultural, and industrial sectors.
•    Reviewing the existing irrigation systems and recommending improvements for efficiency.
•    Promoting modern irrigation techniques and water conservation practices to reduce wastage.
•    Preparing reports on water resource development and disaster management to tackle challenges like droughts and floods.
•    Working towards permanent solutions to inter-state river water disputes, ensuring equitable distribution of resources.
