The Karnataka State Government is set to restart recruitment for thousands of posts across departments, ending a 10-month freeze on fresh appointments. Recruitment was halted in November 2024 following a government directive linked to the revision of internal reservation for Scheduled Castes.

With the state cabinet recently approving the Justice Nagamohan Das Committee’s recommendations, the hurdle has now been cleared. The committee’s report reclassified the 17% Scheduled Caste reservation into three categories, and the revised order is expected to be published in the Gazette shortly. Once this is done, the long-pending recruitment process will resume, with a major push likely after the Gauri Ganesha festival.

Scale of vacancies

According to official figures, Karnataka currently has over 2.76 lakh vacant government posts, with many departments functioning with just 50% staff. Vacancies include 16,017 Grade A posts, 16,734 in Grade B, 1.66 lakh in Grade C, and 77,614 in Grade D. The School Education Department alone has more than 70,000 openings, while Health and Medical Education accounts for 37,000.

To ease the staffing crunch, the government plans to fill 80,000 posts in the initial phase, largely in Group C and D categories. Several recruitment processes stalled last year—such as for land surveyors, Panchayat Development Officers, and PU lecturers—will also be revived.

Officials said that proposals from multiple departments have been sent to the Finance Department and will be routed through KPSC once approvals are granted, paving the way for large-scale recruitment drives in the coming months.
