In a significant ruling, the High Court has refused to stay the ongoing socio-economic and educational survey in the state, which began on September 21. However, the court has permitted the Permanent Backward Classes Commission, responsible for the survey, to proceed with the exercise under certain conditions. An interim order outlining these conditions has been issued.

Relief to Permanent Backward Classes Commission

The decision comes as a relief to both the Permanent Backward Classes Commission and the state government. Senior advocate Abhishek Manusinghvi represented the state government, while senior advocate Professor Ravi Varma Kumar appeared for the Permanent Backward Classes Commission. The matter was deliberated over a span of three days before a bench led by High Court Chief Justice Vibhu Bhakru.

The ruling follows appeals from the State Vokkaligara Sangha and Brahmin Mahasabha, who sought an interim injunction to halt the survey or caste census. Despite their objections, the court has decided not to grant the injunction, thus allowing the survey to continue.

This development marks a key moment in the ongoing efforts to assess the socio-economic and educational conditions of various communities within the state, providing crucial data for potential policy reforms.
