Local body elections likely by end of June: CM Siddaramaiah gives clear signal

After years of delay, elections to Zilla Panchayat, Taluk Panchayat and local bodies may finally be held, with the Chief Minister confirming timelines during his Uttara Kannada visit.

After remaining stalled for several years, elections to Zilla Panchayats (ZP), Taluk Panchayats (TP), and other local bodies in Karnataka are likely to take place soon. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has provided a strong indication that the long-pending polls could be conducted by the end of June, creating fresh excitement among political aspirants across the state.

During his visit to Uttara Kannada district, the Chief Minister spoke to the media in Karwar and clarified the government’s position on the elections. He stated that the state government has begun preparations and that all required processes are currently underway. According to him, the aim is to complete the election process by the end of June, provided procedural formalities are finalised in time.

Explaining the reasons behind the prolonged delay, CM Siddaramaiah said that confusion over reservation lists and constituency delimitation had led to legal challenges, resulting in the matter reaching the courts. These legal hurdles stalled the election process for nearly two to three years. However, he added that most of these obstacles are now close to being resolved.

The Chief Minister further informed that the reservation finalisation process is currently in progress, and once it is completed, the government will move swiftly to announce the election schedule. He assured that the administration is committed to restoring the democratic process at the grassroots level.
