Chief Minister responds to student’s concern, assures discussions with education department; official guidelines on restricting mobile phone use in classrooms expected soon.
Growing dependence on mobile phones among school and college students has become a serious concern for parents and teachers across Karnataka. Amid increasing debates on its impact on learning, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has given a strong indication that the state government may soon introduce a ban on mobile phone usage in schools and colleges.
The development came during a recent Pratibha Puraskara award ceremony, where a student directly raised the issue before the Chief Minister. She pointed out that excessive mobile phone usage was negatively affecting students’ focus, academic performance, and overall discipline. The student urged the government to take firm action and prohibit mobile phones inside educational institutions to protect the learning environment.
Responding positively, CM Siddaramaiah acknowledged the concern, stating that the issue is genuine and deserves serious attention. He said that restricting mobile phone usage in schools and colleges is a constructive idea and assured that he would discuss the matter with the Education Minister and senior officials of the education department.

The Chief Minister further stated that a firm decision would be taken soon, and strict measures would be introduced to prevent students from bringing mobile phones to classrooms.
Currently, while several private schools have already implemented restrictions, mobile phone usage remains widespread in many colleges and government-run schools. Parents have expressed growing anxiety over children becoming addicted to screens, getting distracted from studies, and being exposed to cyber risks. Many believe that a government-issued official order would help bring uniformity and discipline across institutions.
With the Chief Minister personally taking interest in the matter, sources indicate that the education department may soon issue a formal circular, introducing new guidelines to strictly ban mobile phones during class hours. The move is expected to create a healthier academic atmosphere and reduce digital distractions among students.
