According to eyewitnesses, the stone-pelting appeared to be pre-planned. Locals alleged that street lights were switched off during the procession, creating an opportunity for miscreants to hurl stones. Some claimed that the stones even struck the Ganesh idol. “During the Eid Milad celebration, they danced holding their flags, and we did not object. But during our procession, stones were thrown at us,” said residents.

Retaliatory pelting was reported from both sides

The situation escalated briefly as retaliatory pelting was reported from both sides. Alert police personnel moved quickly to contain the situation and took several suspects into custody.

Mandya Superintendent of Police Mallikarjuna Baladandi, who visited the spot, confirmed the arrests. “The Ganesh idol was being carried for immersion when stones fell on the procession. A clash followed, and stone-pelting occurred from both sides. We have registered two cases and a suo motu case as well. Based on a complaint by Ajay, who was injured in the incident, 21 people have been detained,” the SP said.

Police presence in Maddur has been intensified to prevent further unrest, and investigations are underway to identify others involved.
