CM Siddaramaiah says boosting coastal tourism will drive jobs, growth, and help Karnataka lead India in GST collections through higher visitor spending

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has underlined the importance of tourism in driving the state’s economic growth, stating that a focused push in coastal districts could help Karnataka emerge as the leading state in Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections. Speaking at a public event, he emphasized that tourism is not just about leisure but a powerful economic engine that generates revenue across multiple sectors including hospitality, transport, retail, and local services. By strengthening tourism infrastructure and promoting coastal destinations, the government aims to create a cycle of growth that benefits both the state exchequer and local communities.

Siddaramaiah pointed out that districts such as Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada hold immense potential to attract domestic and international visitors. With their beaches, temples, cultural heritage, and natural landscapes, these regions can become major hubs for tourism if supported with better connectivity and facilities. The government is planning investments in roads, airports, and public amenities to ensure that tourists have easier access and more comfortable experiences. He stressed that such development would not only boost GST collections but also generate employment opportunities, particularly for young people, while encouraging entrepreneurship among local residents.

The Chief Minister linked tourism growth directly to fiscal strength, noting that increased spending by visitors translates into higher tax revenues. He argued that Karnataka’s diverse geography and cultural richness give it a unique advantage, and by tapping into coastal tourism, the state can surpass others in GST performance. At the same time, Siddaramaiah assured that the government is committed to sustainable development, ensuring that environmental concerns and local traditions are respected while expanding tourism.

The announcement reflects a broader strategy to position Karnataka as a top destination for travelers while simultaneously strengthening its financial base. By focusing on coastal districts, the government hopes to unlock a new wave of economic activity that will ripple across industries and communities. Siddaramaiah’s vision places tourism at the heart of Karnataka’s growth story, combining fiscal ambition with social and cultural development.
