SL Bhyrappa’s final rites held in Mysuru, Kannada literary world mourns

Padma Bhushan awardee and eminent Kannada writer SL Bhyrappa, known for his philosophical depth and literary masterpieces, passed away at 94. Final rites were held in Mysuru with full state honors.

Renowned Kannada writer and Saraswati Samman awardee SL Bhyrappa passes away at 94, leaving behind a legacy that shaped modern Kannada literature.

The Kannada literary world is in mourning as Padma Bhushan awardee, Saraswati Samman recipient, and philosophical luminary SL Bhyrappa passed away at the age of 94 due to natural age-related ailments. The eminent author, whose works have left an indelible mark on modern Kannada literature, breathed his last at Rashtrotthana Hospital, Bengaluru.

Final rites were conducted at Bhyrappa’s residence in Mysuru on Thursday morning, followed by the cremation at Rudra Bhoomi near Chamundi Hill. The state government accorded full honors to the literary stalwart. Despite Bhyrappa’s prior wish that his sons not perform the last rites, his two sons, Uday Shankar and Ravi Shankar, participated, with the elder son performing the ceremonial fire rites.

The ceremony was attended by his family, locals from his birthplace, and dignitaries including  minister HC Mahadevappa, Venkatesh, MLC Shivakumar, along with political leaders and eminent personalities from various fields. Bhyrappa’s passing marks the end of an era in Kannada literature, a realm enriched by his philosophical insight, narrative mastery, and unwavering commitment to the Kannada language.

Over his lifetime, Bhyrappa’s works carried the torch of Kannada pride across the globe, reflecting deep human emotions and social commentary. His death leaves the literary world “poorer in spirit,” as one of its most prolific and influential voices is no longer among the living.
