  • Statewide jail circular issued by DGP
  • Limits set on food, fruits and clothing
  • Immediate enforcement ordered

Food, clothing, bedding supply to prisoners tightened across all jails; limits set on items given during interviews, with strict checks ordered for immediate implementation.

In a significant administrative move, Director General of Prisons Alok Kumar has issued a statewide circular to all prisons, introducing strict controls on the supply of food, clothing and bedding to inmates. The order, which has come into effect immediately, aims to ensure uniformity, security and strict adherence to the Prison Manual.

As per the circular, prisons are already providing food, clothing and bedding to inmates strictly according to jail rules. However, during interview or meeting hours, prisoners were receiving food items from private individuals. The DGP has now put a complete curb on unrestricted private food supply to inmates.

The circular allows only packed food items to be given to prisoners during interviews, and that too within prescribed weight limits. Fruits such as banana, apple, mango, guava and chikoo can be given, but the total quantity must not exceed 2 kilograms. Items like dry fruits and bakery products are strictly limited to a maximum of 500 grams.

For undertrial prisoners, the rules clearly state that only two pairs of clothes and two inner garments are permitted. The circular specifically prohibits providing any additional clothing beyond this limit, under any circumstances.

The DGP has also directed jail authorities to conduct two levels of inspection, physical checking and security screening, for all items supplied. If required, jail officials have been given the authority to conduct any additional checks to maintain prison security.

The circular has been formally sent to all prisons across the state, with instructions to ensure immediate and strict enforcement. Officials have been warned to follow the guidelines without deviation.
