Karnataka is witnessing an alarming increase in suicide cases, with official data revealing the highest numbers reported in the last four years. According to figures available from 2022 to November 2025, a total of 9,450 suicide cases have been recorded across the state.

The data highlights that family disputes, financial difficulties and unemployment are among the major reasons driving people to take this extreme step. Reports also point to a rise in mental health problems after the Covid-19 pandemic as a significant contributing factor.

Among the total cases reported during this period, 8,148 people died by hanging. Poison consumption accounted for 740 deaths, while 204 people died after jumping from tall buildings. The remaining cases involved other methods.

Officials note that young people form a large share of the victims, raising serious concerns about social, economic and psychological pressures faced by the younger population.

The Home Department report also indicates that urban areas are heavily affected. On average, around 2,000 suicide cases are reported every year in cities. This translates to nearly six to seven people dying by suicide every single day.

A year-wise break-up of the data shows a steady rise. In 2022, 2,313 cases were reported. The number increased to 2,370 in 2023 and further rose to 2,403 in 2024. In 2025, up to November, 2,364 cases have already been recorded.
