After the Chitradurga bus fire, Transport Dept ordered sleeper buses to follow 8 strict safety rules, with compliance mandatory by February-end
The Transport Department has gone on high alert following the recent private bus fire tragedy in Chitradurga that claimed several lives. In response, the National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice, urging authorities to ensure passenger safety and prevent such incidents in the future.
Transport Minister convened a meeting with private bus owners this week, stressing the urgent need to follow strict safety measures. He warned that failure to comply with new rules by the end of February would invite stern action.

The department has outlined eight mandatory rules specifically for sleeper buses. These include removal of the driver’s rear door and sliders in sleeper berths, installation of fire detection systems within five months, and mandatory placement of a 10 kg fire extinguisher on board. Bus operators have also been instructed to halt unauthorized chassis extensions, obtain certificates from approved testing agencies, and ensure that fitness certificates (FC) are issued only if passenger safety standards are met. Additionally, registration of buses will now require verification of the validity of the bus body manufacturing company.
Officials emphasized that these measures are aimed at preventing tragedies like the Chitradurga fire and restoring public confidence in private bus travel. Enforcement teams will monitor compliance closely in the coming weeks.
