  • KAMS seeks two Maths exams in SSLC
  • Proposal on CBSE model from 2027-28
  • Aim is to reduce stress and failures

Private school association KAMS urges Karnataka government to introduce Standard and Basic Mathematics exams in SSLC, on CBSE lines, to reduce exam fear and improve student outcomes.

In a significant recommendation aimed at reducing examination stress among students, the Associated Managements of English Medium Schools in Karnataka (KAMS) has submitted a formal request to the state education department seeking the introduction of two levels of Mathematics examinations in the SSLC system.

KAMS has proposed that from the academic year 2027-28, the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEEB) should conduct two Mathematics exams-Standard and Basic-on the lines of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The request has been made in the interest of student welfare and to align the state syllabus with national education reforms.

According to KAMS, Mathematics has consistently remained one of the most difficult subjects for SSLC students in Karnataka and is a major reason for student failure. Every year, a large number of students struggle to pass Mathematics, leading to academic setbacks, increased exam-related fear, anxiety, and in some cases, dropouts after Class 10.

The association pointed out that CBSE has already implemented a two-level Mathematics examination system, offering students the flexibility to choose the level based on their aptitude and future academic plans. KAMS has urged the state government to extend the same option to Karnataka State Board students to ensure parity and fairness.

In its representation to the Department of School Education and Literacy, KAMS highlighted that conducting two Mathematics exams would significantly reduce student stress and examination pressure. It would also allow students to make informed academic choices without compromising curriculum standards.

The proposal emphasises that Mathematics should test appropriate competency levels rather than act as a barrier to students’ academic progress.

Introducing two exam levels would respect individual learning abilities, reduce fear associated with the subject, and improve overall pass percentages.

KAMS has also stressed that the reform is in line with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) and broader national education policies that focus on learner-centric, competency-based assessment. The association has appealed to the Karnataka government to consider the request seriously and implement the change at the earliest, keeping the long-term interests of students in mind.
