Six-time MLA, former MP and national president of the Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha, Shamanuru Shivashankarappa died in Bengaluru after age-related illness, ending a political career that spanned five decades.

Senior Congress leader Shamanuru Shivashankarappa passed away on Friday evening at the age of 94. He was undergoing treatment for age-related ailments at a private hospital in Bengaluru, where he breathed his last.

Shamanuru Shivashankarappa was the Congress MLA from Davanagere South and also served as the National President of the Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha. His death marks the end of one of Karnataka’s longest and most consistent political careers.

Born on June 16, 1931, in Davanagere, Shivashankarappa remained active in public life for several decades. At the time of his death, he was not only a sitting MLA but also India’s oldest serving member of a State Legislative Assembly.

Over his political journey spanning nearly five decades, Shamanuru Shivashankarappa was elected six times as an MLA and once as a Member of Parliament. He also served as a minister in various state governments, handling important portfolios and playing a key role in Karnataka’s political and administrative affairs.

He was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1994, 2004, 2008, 2013, 2018 and 2023, reflecting his strong connect with voters in Davanagere South. In his long career, he faced electoral defeat only once, in the 1997 Davanagere Lok Sabha by-election.

Shivashankarappa’s family continues to be actively involved in public life. His son S.S. Mallikarjun is currently the Horticulture Minister in the Karnataka government, while his daughter-in-law Prabha Mallikarjun is a sitting Member of Parliament.

Leaders across party lines are expected to pay tribute to the veteran politician, who was widely respected for his experience, longevity in public life and influence in both politics and social organisations.
