Vishvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has announced a major overhaul of its engineering curriculum, aligning it with current industry demands. The university’s decision to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a mandatory subject comes in response to feedback from IT and tech companies, which highlighted the outdated nature of the current syllabus.

Many graduates have struggled to secure jobs, with industry leaders openly criticizing engineering programs for not incorporating the latest technological advancements. The gap between academic preparation and industry requirements has left students unprepared, particularly in the field of AI, which has become central to modern business operations. To address this, VTU is making significant changes to ensure students are equipped with the skills necessary for today’s job market.

Designed to foster a more industry-aligned education

In addition to the inclusion of AI, the updated syllabus offers opportunities for internships at students’ preferred institutions, facilitating practical, hands-on experience. This move is designed to foster a more industry-aligned education. For the first time, VTU has collaborated with over 2,000 teachers, 3,000 students, and industry experts to design the curriculum based on the skills most in demand.

VTU Vice Chancellor Vidyashankar emphasized the global competitiveness of the updated program, which includes exposure to quantum computing and AI, as well as plans for international faculty and student exchanges. This initiative promises to make VTU graduates more competitive, both locally and globally, in an increasingly AI-driven world.
