The Karnataka stretch of the much-anticipated Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway has opened to the public, offering a new 71-kilometre route for long rides. Although the expressway’s Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu sections are still under construction, people from Bengaluru have already begun enjoying joyrides, often turning back at the end of the stretch.

The expressway, expected to be fully operational by August 2025, will reduce the travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai from seven hours to just three. Once completed, the 260-km corridor will connect the southern states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, significantly improving connectivity.
Currently, there are no toll fees being collected, and exit points are available at Malur, Bangarpet, and Bethamangala, making the road a popular choice for leisure drives. This project, part of South India’s first greenfield expressway, is a ₹17,900-crore initiative expected to transform regional travel.
The Karnataka section of the expressway is being developed in three phases. The first phase covers 27.1 km from Hoskote to Malur, the second extends from Malur to Bangarpet, and the third section spans 17.5 km from Bangarpet to Bethamangala. All segments are expected to open soon.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has highlighted that the Bengaluru-Chennai expressway will enhance economic activity and alleviate traffic congestion, promising significant benefits for the region’s infrastructure and connectivity.
