  • Karnataka’s Shakti Scheme to hit 500 crore free rides for women by mid-July
  • 70-75 lakh women travel daily across four state-run bus services
  • The 500th crore passenger will receive a special prize to mark the milestone

The Shakti Scheme, Karnataka’s flagship free bus travel initiative for women, is nearing a major milestone as it approaches 500 crore female passengers in just over two years. Launched on June 11, 2023, the scheme is now set to record its 500th crore ride on July 13 or 14, 2025, marking a historic achievement in the state's transport history.

According to the Karnataka Transport Department, a record 493 crore women commuters have availed of free travel through the four state-run transport corporations so far. Every day, between 70 to 75 lakh women travel for free across KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC buses, contributing to the scheme’s staggering growth.

To mark the 500 crore milestone, the department has planned a special celebration across districts and taluks. Notably, the 500th crore female passenger will receive a “lucky prize”, adding a festive touch to the achievement. The initiative is being coordinated by local Guarantee Scheme Committees, ensuring smooth implementation at the ground level.

The economic impact of Shakti is also significant. Though the travel is free for users, the ticket value has crossed Rs 12,511 crore, reflecting the actual worth of rides delivered. The scheme has not only improved mobility for women, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, but also boosted local travel and pilgrimage. Many women devotees are using the scheme to visit religious destinations, leading to increased footfall at temples and indirectly benefiting the Muzrai Department’s revenues.

Despite early criticism and logistical concerns, Shakti has now become a model of gender-focused governance in public transport. It has improved access to education, employment, and healthcare for lakhs of women and is being closely watched by other states considering similar welfare initiatives.

The Transport Department calls this a "milestone moment", proudly claiming it as the largest free public transport scheme for women in India to date.
