Artificial Intelligence has captured the public imagination in multiple domains ranging from education, healthcare, research and travel to name a few. However its application for crime is an upcoming development of intrigue.

Radhakrishnan hailing from Kozhikode received a video call from an unknown number. The person on the call had facial features that were very similar to his ex-colleague from Andhra Pradesh. The caller was even aware of the identities of some of their mutual friends. Believing it to be genuine, he agreed to help when the caller requested for Rs 40,000 apparently for the medical treatment of one of his relatives. The amount was transferred to a private bank in Maharashtra through the means of online payment. He received a call a while later asking for another Rs 35,000. He tried to cross check by calling his ex colleague only to realise he had been conned. He reported the incident to the police who then had the account frozen.

The Kerala cyber police have said that this is the first reported instance of AI aided crime. The pictures and information can be retrieved from public social media accounts.

Deepfake

Deepfake technology has been one of the most controversial topics in the techno legal domain. It has been used for creating non consensual and pornographic images of famous celebrities from Emma Watson to Rana Ayyub in the past as well. Experts have pressed for the need to draft a sound legal policy for regulating the use of this technology.
