A 55-year-old woman and her two-and-a-half year old grandson named Nihal hailing from the Mandya district of Karnataka died in the landslide in Wayanad. Nihal’s mother Jhansi requested the Karnataka State Government to arrange for their final rites to take place in their native town. The Karnataka State Government accepted their request.
The Karnataka State Government held discussions with the Kerala State Government to ensure the safe transport of the bodies from the site of the disaster back to Karnataka. The bodies were transferred to the K.R Pete region of Mandya from the VIMS Hospital in Kerala. 2 freezer ambulances were arranged for the transport of the 2 bodies. The relatives of the deceased individuals could not hide their grief upon the arrival of the bodies. The people of the village along with the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) H.T Manju were present for the final rites of Nihal and his grandmother. The final rite took place at midnight.

Jhansirani belonging to the K.R Pete taluk of the Mandya district had married Anil Kumar from Mysuru. They were residing in Kerala. Anil, Jhansirani and his father Devaraja were admitted to the VIMS and were in a critical condition after the landslides.
