Messi’s last appearance in India was in 2011, when Argentina faced Venezuela at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium, a match that ended in a goalless draw but left an indelible mark on Indian fans. Kerala, with its rich football heritage, has always been a stronghold for Messi's supporters, boasting numerous fan clubs and gatherings dedicated to the superstar.
Messi’s move to Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2023, following his tenure at Paris Saint-Germain, further expanded his global appeal. His performances in the MLS continue to captivate Indian fans, many of whom stay up late to watch him play.
In a recent World Cup qualifier, Messi equalled U.S. legend Landon Donovan’s record for the most assists in international football as Argentina defeated Peru 1-0. His assist to Lautaro Martínez at La Bombonera highlighted his exceptional playmaking skills and reinforced Argentina’s dominance in South American qualifying rounds. Kerala’s football enthusiasts eagerly await this historic visit from one of the sport’s greatest players.
