Govindachamy, who was serving a life sentence for the brutal crime, had managed to flee from the facility undetected for nearly 6 hours. Acting swiftly, Kannur police launched a large-scale manhunt with the help of a dog squad and by analyzing nearby CCTV footage.

Eventually, Govindachamy was found hiding inside a well near an abandoned house, around 4 kilometers from the jail premises. He was spotted and re-arrested between 10:00 and 10:30 AM on the same day.

The original 2011 case had stirred massive public outrage when 23-year-old Soumya was raped and murdered aboard a passenger train traveling from Ernakulam to Shoranur. The crime had occurred near Manjakkad, and Govindachamy was subsequently convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the lapse in prison security that enabled his escape.
