Legendary Indian actress B. Saroja Devi, revered as “Abhinaya Saraswathi” (the goddess of acting), passed away at the age of 87 in Bengaluru on Monday due to age-related health issues. She breathed her last at Manipal Hospital in Yeshwanthpur, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable cinematic journey that spanned over four decades.

Born Radhadevi on January 7, 1938, in Bengaluru, she was the daughter of Byre Gowda, a police officer, and Rudramma. Saroja Devi made her screen debut in the mid-1950s and went on to become one of the most celebrated actresses in Indian cinema, acting in over 161 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.

Her contribution to Kannada cinema remains iconic, with memorable roles in films such as Mahakavi Kalidasa, Kittur Chennamma, Bhakta Kanakadasa, Nagakannike, Bettada Hoovu, and Kasturi Nivasa. She also achieved great success in Tamil films like Nadodi Mannan, Karpoora Karasi, and Thirumanam.

Saroja Devi was conferred with several prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri in 1969 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. She also received the Kalaimamani award from the Tamil Nadu government and an honorary doctorate from Bangalore University.

Her passing is being mourned across the film fraternity and by fans, as she leaves behind an enduring legacy in Indian cinema.
