700 MLD of treated water can be reused for tertiary purposes

Wastewater is produced by community of people after using freshwater

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the executive chairperson of Biocon Limited – Asia’s leading Biopharmaceuticals company has shared a tweet on waste water recyling.

“The Bangalore Apartments’ Federation, representing over 1,200 residential complexes in the city, has devised a plan titled ‘BAF Hasiru Grey2Green – Towards Efficient Utilization of Treated Water.’” read the tweet.

This plan outlines how city apartments and malls can contribute more than 700 million liters per day (MLD) of treated water for various tertiary purposes, including landscaping, aquifer replenishment and construction activities.

What is Wastewater?

Wastewater is the water generated as a result of using freshwater, raw water, drinking water, or saline water in various intentional applications or processes. In everyday language, wastewater is often synonymous with sewage, which is the wastewater produced by a community of people and is also referred to as domestic wastewater or municipal wastewater.

What is Wastewater Treatment?

Wastewater treatment is a process that involves the removal and elimination of contaminants from wastewater, transforming it into an effluent that can be reintroduced into the water cycle. Once returned to the water cycle, this effluent has a minimal impact on the environment or is reused for various purposes.

This treatment process is typically carried out in a wastewater treatment plant. In the case of domestic wastewater, which is also called municipal wastewater or sewage, the treatment plant is specifically referred to as a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).
