In a disturbing revelation, the prosecution in the Kolkata law student rape case told a city court that an inhaler was purchased not to help the victim recover, but to extend the brutal sexual assault. The statement was made during a hearing that led to the extension of police custody for three accused until July 8.

Chief public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal informed the court that the 24-year-old victim, a student of South Calcutta Law College, had suffered a panic attack and breathing difficulties during the assault. Rather than showing concern, the accused allegedly revived her with an inhaler to continue the attack.

The key accused, Monojit Mishra—linked to the student wing of the Trinamool Congress—along with two other students, remains in custody. A fourth person has also been arrested in connection with the case.

CCTV footage confirmed that one of the accused left the college campus to purchase the inhaler from a nearby pharmacy. The victim, in her complaint, stated that she pleaded to be taken to the hospital but was denied help. The college gate had been locked, and the security guard allegedly failed to intervene.

While the defence claims the inhaler was provided out of humanitarian concern, the prosecution insists it was a calculated act to facilitate further assault, highlighting the severity and cruelty of the crime.
