  • Coastal and select districts are under red and orange alerts, while others face yellow alerts
  • Fishermen are warned against sea travel, and residents urged to exercise caution

A low-pressure system brewing in the Bay of Bengal is set to drench Karnataka with heavy rainfall over the next five days, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The state is likely to witness widespread showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds until June 15, 2025. Coastal regions, particularly Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada, are expected to face torrential downpours, leading authorities to caution fishermen against venturing into the sea.

On June 12, 2025, a yellow alert is in effect for all but one of Karnataka’s 30 districts, with Uttara Kannada excluded. A red alert, signaling the risk of extremely heavy rain, has been issued for Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, and Chikkamagaluru. An orange alert, indicating heavy rainfall, applies to Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Koppal, Raichur, Vijayanagar, Ballari, Davanagere, and Hassan. Sixteen other districts, including Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Bengaluru, Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Ramanagara, and Mandya, are under a yellow alert for moderate to heavy showers.

On June 13, 2025, the red alert remains for Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada, and Chikkamagaluru. Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Hassan, and Kodagu are under an orange alert, while Bengaluru, Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagara, Chamarajanagar, Mysuru, Tumakuru, and other districts face a yellow alert.

For June 14, 2025, the red alert continues for Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu. Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri, Hassan, and Mysuru are under an orange alert, with yellow alerts covering remaining districts like Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Bengaluru, and Bengaluru Rural.

The IMD advises residents to stay alert, avoid flood-prone areas, and follow local safety guidelines. The heavy rains could disrupt daily life, impact transportation, and increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
