Kiran Rao’s film Laapataa Ladies failed to make the shortlist for the Best International Feature category at the Oscars 2025, leaving fans and creators disappointed. The film, India’s official entry for the prestigious awards, was directed by Rao and produced by Aamir Khan, Jyoti Deshpande, and Jio Studios.
In a heartfelt statement, the makers expressed their gratitude to the Academy and the Film Federation of India (FFI) for the nomination.

Acknowledging the support from audiences worldwide, the team congratulated the shortlisted films, emphasizing their commitment to creating meaningful cinema. “This is not the end but a step forward. We remain dedicated to sharing more powerful stories with the world,” reportedly a statement from makers said.
The film, a satirical drama, follows two newlywed brides who get mixed up during a train journey, leading to a humorous and poignant exploration of societal norms. It stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan.
Meanwhile, Laapataa Ladies’ exit sparked criticism from fans and filmmakers, including Hansal Mehta and Grammy-winner Rickey Kej, who questioned FFI’s selection process. Many suggested Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light might have been a stronger contender for the Oscars.
Despite the setback, the Laapataa Ladies team remains optimistic, viewing this as a step forward in their cinematic journey.
