As we celebrate our country’s 77th Independence Day on August 15, 2023, let us take a look at the history and significance of our national flag:
- The first national flag of India had three colours namely red, yellow and green. It was first hoisted at Parsee Bagan Square in Kolkata on August 7, 1906.
- The tricolour flag with saffron, white and green colours with Mahatma Gandhi's spinning wheel at the center was adopted as our national flag after passing a landmark resolution in 1931.
- After few changes, the Indian National Flag with Ashoka chakra from the lion capital of emperor Ashoka was officially adopted on July 22, 1947 and was first hoisted on August 15, 1947.
- Indian citizens were allowed to hoist the national flag only on a few selected occasions and this was changed after industrialist Naveen Jindal’s legal battle in the Supreme Court on Indians right to freely hoisting the flag.
- In the landmark Supreme Court judgement of January 23, 2004, the apex court declared that the right to fly national flag freely with respect and dignity is a fundamental right of an Indian citizen under Article 19(1) (a) of the Constitution of India.
- The first version of the national flag of India was designed by Sister Nivedita, a staunch disciple of Swami Vivekananda in 1904.
- The original version of today’s ‘Jana Gana Mana’ national anthem was composed by Rabindranath Tagore in 1911 as the ‘Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata’ song.
- The Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha (KKGSS) is the only certified manufacturer and supplier of the Indian flagto the entire country by Khadi and Village Industries Commission of India.
- Tiranga or Tricolor has three colors. Saffron on the top signifies strength and courage of the country. White in the middle signifies peace and truth. Green at the bottom signifies fertility, growth and auspiciousness of the land.
