Lok Sabha Election 2024: Rahul Gandhi to not contest in Amethi for first time in 20 years

May 3rd is the last day for filing nominations in the Amethi and Raebareli Lok Sabha constituencies which are traditionally considered to be a bastion of the Indian National Congress (INC). The INC had created suspense with regard to the candidates who would be fielded from these seats.

 An announcement in this regard was made during the early hours of May 3rd. INC leader Rahul Gandhi who has been contesting from Amethi since 2004 will not be in contention for the seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. In 2019 he lost to Smriti Irani of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of 55,120 votes. 

KL Sharma who has been in the constituency for 40 years would be the candidate from INC for Amethi constituency. KL Sharma thanked the High Command for their decision. He was a close associate for the Former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi would however be contesting from Raebareli which was held by his mother Sonia Gandhi since 2004. Sonia Gandhi was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan. She cited health concerns as the reason she would not be able to contest from the seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha Election.
