  • Annamalai to contest from Coimbatore
  • He was known for his strictness as a cop
  • The BJP top brass backs him to the hilt

K Annamalai, the former IPS officer known for his fearless approach, has been nominated by the BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Coimbatore constituency. Annamalai, who became the youngest president of the Tamil Nadu BJP in 2021, has been instrumental in challenging the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu.

Despite lacking electoral success, Annamalai's aggressive leadership has invigorated the BJP's presence in Tamil Nadu, a state traditionally dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. With the AIADMK weakened after the demise of J Jayalalithaa, the BJP saw an opportunity to expand its influence in the state and appointed Annamalai to lead the party's Tamil Nadu unit.

Annamalai, known as "Singham Anna" for his tough stance during his tenure as an IPS officer, has been pivotal in addressing corruption allegations against the DMK government. He has launched scathing attacks on the ruling party, releasing audio tapes implicating DMK leaders in corruption scandals. Despite facing defamation cases from the DMK, Annamalai has continued his crusade against corruption, supported by the BJP leadership.

Annamalai's relentless efforts to strengthen the BJP in Tamil Nadu were evident during his statewide "En Mann, En Makkal" padayatra, which covered all 234 constituencies. The padayatra, culminating with Prime Minister Modi's attendance, garnered significant support, showcasing Annamalai's growing influence beyond social media.

In fact, political strategist Prashant Kishor predicts a significant increase in BJP's vote share in Tamil Nadu, crediting Annamalai for the party's stronger base in the state. Annamalai's strategic leadership has positioned the BJP as the principal opposition in Tamil Nadu, challenging the state's entrenched political dynamics.

As Tamil Nadu braces for electoral change, Annamalai's leadership may prove instrumental in determining the BJP's electoral fortunes in the state.
