Sumalatha withdraws her candidacy from Mandya

She will support HD Kumaraswamy, a former CM

The leader will also join the BJP

Sumalatha Ambareesh, who represents the Mandya constituency in Karnataka in the Parliament, has revealed that she would not contest the Lok Sabha polls 2024.

It might be recalled that she had held a meeting with her supporters last week in order to chart her political future.

In the last Lok Sabha elections 2019, she had contested as an Independent candidate and defeated Nikhil Kumaraswamy of the JD(S).

However, this time, former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy will be contesting from the same constituency as a BJP-JD(S) coalition candidate.

Speculation rife

Speculations were rife that Sumalatha would contest the elections again as an independent candidate. Reasoning out her move, she said, “Last time, PM Modi himself batted for me. I won. This time, the BJP and JD(S) have decided to fight it out as a coalition. At the same time, I have also decided to join the BJP.”

This effectively means she would be supporting Kumaraswamy.
