Following severe rainfall that left parts of Bengaluru waterlogged and disrupted daily life, the Karnataka Lokayukta has taken strong action against the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for its lack of preparedness. On a visit to rain-affected areas yesterday, Lokayukta Justice BS Patil, along with Upa Lokayukta Justices Veerappa and Phaneendra, expressed serious concern over the civic body's failure to take preventive measures before the onset of monsoon.

During the inspection, the Lokayukta team observed the poor state of infrastructure and questioned BBMP officials about the lack of desilting and the failure to remove encroachments on stormwater drains. The team directed that legal action be taken against those responsible for the negligence.

In light of this, the Lokayukta summoned BBMP and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials for a special hearing today. Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao, Chief Engineer Prahlad, and other senior BBMP officials appeared before the Lokayukta court. Complaints have officially been registered against both BBMP and BMRCL regarding their monsoon preparedness.

Justice BS Patil demanded detailed information on steps taken for rain management, especially in heavily affected areas like Sai Layout. He made it clear that civic authorities would be held accountable for negligence.
