The long-standing inter-state water dispute between Karnataka and Goa has resurfaced, this time with renewed intensity over the Mahadayi river project. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has objected to Karnataka’s Kalasa-Banduri Nala project, which aims to provide drinking water to several districts in North Karnataka.

The Kalasa-Banduri project seeks to divert 40 TMC of Mahadayi river water to supply drinking water to districts like Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, and Bagalkot. While Karnataka has maintained that the project is essential for meeting the basic water needs of its people, Goa has opposed it, claiming environmental and legal concerns. In a recent statement made in the Goa Assembly, CM Sawant claimed that Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav personally assured him that the Centre would not grant approval for the project.

This assertion has triggered sharp criticism from Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who called the statement an insult to the people of Karnataka. He accused both the Goa government and the Centre of conspiring to block the project for political reasons. Siddaramaiah went as far as to allege that the Centre's move amounts to a betrayal of Kannadigas, especially when the state has already completed groundwork for implementing the project.

The Karnataka government, backed by Law Minister H K Patil, has strongly condemned Goa’s resistance and reiterated that the project is a lifeline for millions in northern Karnataka. They also warned that if the Centre refuses environmental clearance, Karnataka will be forced to launch a united protest.
