Bhatt, a prominent figure in the 80s and 90s, revolutionized Hindi cinema with his unique storytelling. However, after directing "Sadak 2," starring his daughter Alia Bhatt, he has decided to step away from filmmaking. This decision comes despite his previous retirement in 1999, following the release of "Kartoos," which he broke to helm "Sadak 2" in 2020. The sequel to his 1991 classic received harsh reviews, marking a disappointing end to his directorial journey.

"Sadak 2" was also Bhatt's last project for Vishesh Films, the production house he co-founded with his brother Mukesh Bhatt. Their professional split further solidified his decision to retire. Vishesh Films, known for its string of successful low-budget, high-concept films in the early 2000s, now continues without Mahesh Bhatt's involvement.

Reflecting on his career, Bhatt described himself as an "extinct volcano," acknowledging his vast knowledge and experience but admitting a lack of the insatiable drive required to leave a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry. "I am outdated, a has-been," he stated, highlighting the relentless ambition necessary for success in cinema, which he feels he no longer possesses.
