Rajat, a 25-year-old man who had once helped rescue Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant from a near-fatal car accident, is battling for his life after consuming poison along with his girlfriend, Mannu, 21. The couple took the drastic step on February 9 after Mannu’s family arranged her marriage with another person, reportedly against her wishes.

The incident took place in Buchcha village near Roorkee, Uttarakhand. While Mannu succumbed to poisoning during treatment on Wednesday, Rajat is currently receiving medical care at a private hospital in Roorkee.

According to police reports, the couple’s families had opposed their relationship due to caste differences. No formal complaint has been filed by either family, but authorities have launched an investigation. Superintendent of Police (Muzaffarnagar) Satyanarayan Prajapat confirmed that legal action will be taken based on further evidence.

Rajat came into the public spotlight in December 2022 when he and his friend Nishu saved Rishabh Pant after his Mercedes crashed and caught fire near Roorkee. The duo immediately rushed the cricketer to a hospital, ensuring he received timely medical attention.

The tragic turn of events has raised concerns over social barriers and the distress they cause young couples in India. Authorities continue to probe the matter while Rajat remains critical in the hospital.
