With persistent and widespread rainfall in the catchment areas, the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam in Mandya district is swiftly approaching full capacity, sparking concerns of possible flooding in the downstream regions of the Cauvery River.

As of today, the dam stands at 117 feet, just 7 feet short of its full capacity. The inflow into the reservoir has surged to over 40,000 cusecs, with indications that this volume may increase further in the coming days. If the inflow continues at this rate or rises, authorities may be compelled to release excess water at short notice, potentially inundating low-lying areas.
In anticipation of such a development, the Cauvery Neeravari Nigama and Mandya District Administration have jointly issued a flood alert. Residents living along the riverbanks have been urged to relocate to safer locations. Livestock owners have also been advised to keep animals away from the river’s edge.
A particularly sensitive location is the Gautama Kshetra situated on a sandbank in the middle of the river, where the spiritual figure Gajanan Swamiji resides. Mandya taluk officials, including the tahsildar, have formally requested Swamiji to vacate the area to avoid any danger.
While no floodwaters have yet been released, officials warn that any further rise in inflow could trigger immediate discharge from the dam, with little time for evacuation.
