This incident comes just a day after another shocking crime in Bidar, where two men on a motorcycle fatally shot two security guards and fled with Rs 93 lakh intended for an ATM.
In the Mangaluru robbery, which occurred between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm, a group of five to six masked men, believed to be aged between 25 and 35, stormed the bank. Armed with a pistol, a sword, and a knife, the robbers intimidated the staff, communicating in Hindi and Kannada, and forced them to unlock the vault containing gold jewellery and other assets. There were four to five employees present at the time, but no security guards were on duty.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who was in the city at the time, held an urgent meeting with top police officials to address the security breach. He instructed heightened vigilance at toll booths and key routes across four districts to prevent the robbers from fleeing.
Multiple police teams have been deployed to investigate, using CCTV footage and technical surveillance to track the suspects. Checkpoints have been established on roads leading to Kerala, Goa, and Bengaluru. The investigation is ongoing.
