  • K'taka Lokayukta reveals alarming levels of water pollution in 2,020 lakes
  • Water from these lakes across Bengaluru is unfit even for agricultural use
  • Almost all of these lakes remain heavily polluted and encroached upon

A sweeping inspection by the Karnataka Lokayukta has revealed alarming levels of water pollution in 2,020 lakes across Bengaluru and surrounding zones, all falling under the ‘D’ and ‘E’ categories—making them unfit even for agricultural use. This classification, disclosed during surprise visits to Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) offices on Wednesday, highlights years of unchecked environmental degradation.

The inspection exposed widespread discharge of untreated sewage into the Vrishabhavathi River, primarily by civic bodies BBMP and BWSSB. The absence of an underground drainage network, rather than industrial or residential waste, was identified as the main cause. Despite consistent poor water quality reports over the years, no legal action has been taken against these agencies under the relevant environmental protection laws.

KSPCB’s failure extends beyond monitoring. Authorities admitted to allowing constructions within a 50-metre radius of water bodies, bypassing the mandatory 500-metre buffer zone. Only a handful of lakes—under judicial scrutiny—have seen minimal protection efforts, while the rest remain heavily polluted and encroached upon.

Senior Lokayukta officials also conducted separate inspections following multiple complaints of corruption, nepotism, and gross dereliction of duty against KSPCB staff.
